Woodcarving
This was my main pastime before taking up pottery.
I still produce a few carvings a year, mainly of horses.
Having worked with them as a groom soon after leaving school, my love
of them has never left me.
It's challenge working in a medium where mistakes cannot be rectified,
unlike clay where material can be added or subtracted until the sculpture
is completed.
My first ever carving was of an axe in a log, perhaps because I used them
a lot in my job as a Gardener/Tree Surgeon.
When I am pruning at work I collect bends off of various trees and shrubs
and carve them into axes.
My collection is growing with many bends waiting to be carved.
